ahoy = hello

ARR! = arr

avast = "stop", or "stand back"

bandanna = necessary head wrap

bloody = a general expletive which simply lends emphasis, not meaning, as in: "What the bloody devil is going on?"

booty = bounty

bounty = booty

buccaneer = according to Merriam Webster, "an unscrupulous adventurer especially in politics or business" Har! What is so bad about that?

doubloon = Spanish gold coins

chantey, chanties, shanties = songs sung by sailors while working

grog = conglomerate alcoholic beverage... from Edward Vernon who was famous for watering down sailor's liquor. Often served like a toddy - hot with lemon and sugar.

hoist = to lift or raise as in "hoist the sails"

jolly = a word used to describe pleasure

matey, mate = friend

motley = unkempt, mismatched, dirty

pillage = to steal and ruin

plunder = to steal

privateer = according to Merriam Webster, "an armed private ship licensed to attack enemy shipping; also a sailor on such a ship"

scurvy = deficiency caused by lack of vitamin C, common after long time at sea. Results in hair loss, rotten teeth and some other lovely manifestations.

seafaring = relating to travel on the high seas

shiver me timbers = we don't know either

rogue = according to Merriam Webster, " a dishonest or worthless person" but we think us some lovable folk

swab = to mop, as in "swab the deck"

swarthy = dark in color, as in skin dARRkened by the light 'o the sun reflectin' off the deck

swashbuckler = adventurous, daring soldier or adventure, perhaps prone to boast

rapier = narrow straight two edged sword

rum = necessary beverage

vessel = ship, water craft

wench = English word for a female server or a lewd and baudy woman

yarns = stories to "spin a yarn" is to "tell a tale"

yarr = same as ARR!

ye = you
